What is Collagen?
Collagen is a term we have all heard or know about. You probably have some sort of collagen boosting cream or supplement at home right now!
To understand collagen from a medical perspective, it is an insoluble protein that makes up our connective tissue in our skin and tendons. As we go through our natural aging process, we begin to lose our natural collagen. You lose about 1% of collagen each year after the age of 18. By 50, you lose almost 30% of collagen. The first place we lost collagen is in our temples, jawline, and cheeks.
Even though these creams and supplements promise to boost collagen production in the body, it does not absorb into the skin as well as you may think. Collagen molecules are actually too large to penetrate our skin. These creams do help moisturize the skin which can briefly improve the skin’s appearance. You may have also tried collagen dietary supplements. Collagen dietary supplements are meant to facilitate the production of collagen within the body. Still, collagen proteins are broken down by our digestive system making the results for this method of using collagen inconclusive.
How does Sculptra work?
Sculptra works from within. It stimulates your body’s natural collagen production and is injected where we tend to lose collagen the most. Sculptra Aesthetic is made with biocompatible, biodegradable, synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid, which is naturally absorbed by the body and gradually helps rebuild lost collagen. It restores facial volume and fills in wrinkles and folds over time. Sculptra can be injected to correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds. Results appear gradually after the procedure and can last up to two years. It is recommended to do three injections over the course of three to four months. It must be administered by a trained specialist. Lots of patients will prefer this treatment over getting a surgical facelift.
