What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate spider veins. This approach will involve injecting of a solution to directly affect the veins. This solution would irritate the blood vessel’s lining and cause it to swell, merge and eventually clot. As time goes by, these vessels will become scar tissues that fade from view eventually. Since the 1930s, sclerotherapy has long been a popular and well-proven treatment.

Care for Sclerotherapy Post Treatment Patients

Once the treatment is done, patients will be able to drive themselves home and go back to doing their normal activities. They are encouraged to walk around but not to do exercises that are too strenuous for the time being. It is important to plan your schedule ahead of a sclerotherapy post treatment.

Patients will be instructed by the medical professional to wear medical-grade support hosiery in order to continually compress the vessels administered with the treatment for up to 14 days, depending on specification.

You should also avoid taking ibuprofen, aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medicines for at least two weeks. You may use Tylenol if needed.

The Sclerotherapy Side Effects

You can expect to have mild itching at least for two days after the sclerotherapy treatment. It is possible to experience raised areas that are red at the injection site and should disappear in a few days. It is common to bruise in the area of treatment and can last from several days to a few weeks.

This procedure contraindicates certain medical conditions such as cardiac diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure and infections.

The Results of Sclerotherapy

Normally, the spider veins in the body will respond within three to six weeks after being treated, while the larger vessels can take up to four months. It is important to note that it is still possible for new veins to pop up like before and having frequent sclerotherapy treatments done at least once a year will help keep the appearance of your beautiful legs.
