About Eczema

Extreme cases of eczema are difficult to manage on your own and may need the guidance of an experienced dermatologist to soothe the inflammation it causes. Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a longer-lasting skin rash (similar to dermatitis) that can cause the skin to become itchy and red. Children commonly have bouts of eczema (because of allergies), but it can also happen at any time to adults anywhere on the body. At Advanced Dermatology in Katy, League City, Pearland, and Sugar Land, TX, our experienced practitioners strive to provide you with the highest quality treatments, medical resources, and more to help you manage your eczema in any stage.

Causes

Triggered by your weakened immune system or exposure to a skin irritant in your environment, eczema can develop for many reasons. There is no direct cause of eczema. We do know that if you have someone in your family who is sensitive to eczema outbreaks, you may be too. Also, if you have asthma or allergies — you are at a higher risk for eczema episodes.

Symptoms

Itchy, red skin that feels dry and swollen to the touch are common characteristics of eczema. Chronic eczema endurers may even have patches of thickened skin where eczema has made its mark. Showing up on the face, neck, hands, or legs, eczema looks like dry patches of skin with open sores that may crust over. Advanced eczema can have pus-filled blisters and/or a yellow to brown colored crust, which may be a symptom of a bacterial infection.

Treatment Options

If over-the-counter products no longer have an effect on your eczema, it may be time to seek treatment at Advanced Dermatology. We offer oral medications and topical therapies, such as:

  • Antihistamines (like Benadryl)
  • Corticosteroids
  • Immunomodulators
  • Oral steroid
  • Prescription-strength hydrocortisone cream
  • Steroid cream
  • Light therapy
  • Laser therapy

You may need to try one or all of these interventions to find your appropriate treatment for the symptoms of eczema. This does not cure eczema, but these options can make living with it more comfortable.
