Skin Pigment Issues

Irregular changes in skin color are a common problem with a wide array of potential causes and treatments. Any age, gender or race can experience skin pigment issues. Changes in pigmentation can be widespread or localized areas of lighter or darker skin. Although most pigmentation disorders are benign and not harmful, some disorders concerning pigmentation may cause cosmetic or psychological upset. The team at Advanced Dermatology is highly trained in treating skin pigmentation issues.

Causes of skin pigment issues

The color of your skin is determined by the amount of melanin (color or pigment) in your skin. Those with fair skin produce much less melanin than darker skin tones. Typically, melanin is evenly distributed across the body; however when melanin congregates more heavily in certain areas it can result in abnormal skin pigmentation such as freckles, melasma or age spots. When melanin rates are abnormally low, the result is hypopigmentation. An absence of melanin is called depigmentation.

Categories of skin pigment issues

  • Hyperpigmentation — skin that is darker than normal. This occurs when there is an excess of melanin. Examples of hyperpigmented skin include melasma, sun spots, freckles and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation.
  • Hypopigmentation — skin that is lighter than normal. A result of an absence of melanin. Examples of hypopigmentation include vitiligo.
  • Depigmentation — loss of skin pigment. The skin will appear white. Examples of depigmentation include Albinism.

Treatments for skin pigmentation problems

Modalities of treatment vary based on the type and severity of pigmentation issues. Some common treatment options for skin pigment issues include:

  • Chemical peels
  • Laser therapy
  • Phototherapy
  • Topical treatments such as retinoids and hydroquinone

  • I will never go to any other dermatologist! Dr. Duncan has taken care of me for about seven years now, and she is an incredible doctor. The best thing about her is that she is an expert on making you look refreshed and younger without any signs that you have had anything done. I get Botox and filler from Dr. Duncan, and no one can believe that I am 44, or for that matter that I have had any work done. Subtlety is her specialty! [She has] a keen eye for assessing your particular needs, without pushing unnecessary treatments or products. Advanced Dermatology takes pride in their work and it shows!”
