Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate spider veins. The procedures involves an injection a solution directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to swell and stick together, and the blood to clot. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view. Sclerotherapy is a well-proven procedure that has been in use since the 1930’s.
After the treatment you will be able to drive yourself home and resume your regular activities. Walking is encouraged but not strenuous exercise, so please plan your schedule accordingly. You will be instructed to wear medical grade support hosiery to compress the treated vessels for 6 to 14 days, depending on your specific concern and the amount of vessels treated.
Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory medications for two weeks prior to your appointment and 48 hours after the treatment. Tylenol may be used if needed.
Mild itching can be expected and last for one to two days after the procedure. Also, you may experience raised red areas at the injection site. These should disappear within a few days. Bruising is common and may occur around the injection site and can last for several days to weeks.
Certain medical conditions such as infections, cardiac diseases, high blood pressure, as well as diabetes are contraindicated for this procedure.
In general, spider veins respond in three to six weeks, some larger vessels can take three to four months to respond. However, new veins may appear at the same rate as before and touch ups are recommended every 12 to 24 months to keep legs looking their best.

“I will never go to any other dermatologist! Dr. Duncan has taken care of me for about seven years now, and she is an incredible doctor. The best thing about her is that she is an expert on making you look refreshed and younger without any signs that you have had anything done. I get Botox and filler from Dr. Duncan, and no one can believe that I am 44, or for that matter that I have had any work done. Subtlety is her specialty! [She has] a keen eye for assessing your particular needs, without pushing unnecessary treatments or products. Advanced Dermatology takes pride in their work and it shows!”
