One of the most remarkable methods for skin rejuvenation is a novel treatment called SkinPen. It is used to treat acne scars, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles as well as overall skin rejuvenation. It is relatively painless, requires very little downtime, and can be performed in a 30 minute session for most patients. Best of all, it can be used on all skin types and virtually any area on the body.
So how does it work? SkinPen works on the same principal as essentially all resurfacing techniques, whether laser, mechanical (microdermabrasion, dermaplaning,) or chemical based (acid peels): controlled injury to the layers of the skin produces a rapid repair response in the body resulting in new collagen and a smoother, finer appearance. With SkinPen this injury is produced by micro-needling the upper layers of the skin; the device rolls across the surface inducing a repair response in the skin at a specific depth that is particularly effective at resurfacing acne scars, fine lines, stretch marks and uneven skin texture. Most patients require 3 to 6 sessions spaced one month apart. Results can be seen as early as one week though improvement of the treated area can continue for up to 6 months after the final session.
“One of my favorite areas to use SkinPen is the area above the lip, often referred to as “smoker’s lines”, though in reality they occur most often in non-smokers,” says Dr. Sherry Ingraham. “Often I alternate SkinPen treatments with Fraxel laser if the lines are deep, and end with a session of Restylane Silk filler into the lines themselves. The results can be quite significant.” Dr. Ingraham also likes the SkinPen for resurfacing cheeks with large pores from sun damage, and for treating fine lines or crow’s feet around the eyes.
